About the Area
George South Africa:

Located in a quaint town in the Garden Route called George, set between the well-known areas of “The Wilderness” and “Knysna”, with the Ostrich farms only a short ride away. Then in the opposite direction a couple of minutes’ drive to have access to the most beautiful beaches in the southern cape region.

The beginnings of the town date back to the year 1776, when the Dutch-East Indian Trading Company established here one of its timber supply bases. But the town was officially only founded in 1811 by the British who named the place after the then King, George III.

Initially George grew very slowly, mainly because roads viable for ox wagons were missing in the hardly accessible Outeniqua Mountains. Only with the opening of the Outeniqua Pass in the year 1847, trade with the inland could develop and George began to flourish. There is a main Domestic Airport with links to all the cities across South Africa. Game farms and Golfing on the door step too.

About the property:

This is a substantial double property of 4000 sq. meters (1 acre in size) which could be subdivided if required, with a wooded, well laid out garden, a pond emanating from a natural spring which has its source in George Mountain about 2 to 3 kms away.

The numerous trees and shrubs make it home to a variety of birds. Part of the property is enclosed by a wall and the rest by a high natural hedge. Access is via remote controlled gates and there is a brick built private barbecue (Braai) area near the swimming pool. There is ample space for the construction of 2 or 3 more self-catering cottages if required.

The Main House comprises: 2 bedrooms, 1+1/2 bathrooms, study, large lounge/dining room, kitchen/scullery and an upstairs utility room currently used as a sewing/ironing room.

The Guest Section: There are 4 double rooms, all with private entrances, (no guests use the main house), 3 of which open on to a patio overlooking the garden and swimming pool, and the 4th has its own private garden. All rooms have TV, fans, fridge and bathroom-en-suite and 3 have a fully equipped kitchenette while the 4th has a fridge, tea/coffee facilities and a sink but no cooking facilities.

The property opens many opportunities for its use:

Arbour Lodge is strategically situated in a prime position on a corner stand of the upmarket suburb of Heather lands in George, at the base of the Outeniqua Mountain range and running parallel to the Jan Riebeck Park. It is within easy walking distance of the Southern Cape Botanical Gardens, and Cradock and George Mountain Peaks. Town centre, and sports facilities, a few minutes walking distance to the Ernie Els designed George Golf Course, the rugby stadium, where the Rugby Sevens have been played over the past 4 years, the George Bowling Club, and tennis club. It is also only 10 – 15 minutes’ drive to other golf courses in the George area.

The homestead is situated at the top of a rise on the property, that overlooks the swimming pool and large tranquil garden with an abundance of trees, and shrubs, making it a bird lovers paradise. At the bottom of the property is a natural wetland, laden with water lilies, fed by an underground spring from the mountain, and a small stream on the boundary.

The Main House:

The main house has 3 bedrooms, one of which is upstairs, one and a half bathrooms, a study, large lounge/dining room, with blackwood flooring, kitchen, a scullery.

An inter leading door into a 4th bedroom with kitchenette and bathroom en-suite, ideal as a “granny flat” if required.

There is an outside toilet for domestic workers, an enclosed “shed” wired with lighting, and an open plan garden potting shed. This exterior work shed is 3.6m x 5.4 m totalling 19.4 square metres.

The total area of the main building is 330 square metres.

The Guest Wing:

There are three double suites, with bathroom en-suite, all with private entrances, which run along a staggered veranda giving privacy, overlooking the large garden and swimming pool. Two of three suites have a fully equipped self-catering kitchenette area.

Off the main lounge of the House is an enclosed patio which is used as the guest breakfast room, equipped with gas cooking facilities, toaster/kettle etc. This enables the guest to be separate, with no need to enter the main house at all. Off this enclosed area is a wooden deck, entered from glass sliding doors, for the use of the guests.

The main lounge can be closed off from this guest dining room and patio. There are four carports, and two braai BBQ facilities, for guests. The property is surrounded by a concrete wall with remote controlled gate at the entrance.
